  • Themes that emerge from a study of five university teachers from two four-year state universities in Florida explore critical pedagogy by examining questions of how self-defined critical teachers construct, negotiate, and enact critical pedagogy; how they assess or reflect on the outcomes of their negotiation; and what effect their negotiation of critical pedagogy has on the critical teachers themselves. Within a context of praxis-oriented research, the researcher “collaboratively” interviewed five teachers over a seven-month period, observed their classroom teaching, and collected documents. After identifying emergent, but widely varying, themes in the data, the researcher was challenged to understand the study differently, not as one centered on the teacher-participants, but one centered on herself as a critical teacher. The researcher connects her own critical teaching specifically to issues that arose within the research: the classroom as a contact zone and as a community, the role of emotions and feelings in teaching, and the place of lesbian and gay issues in her pedagogy. The researcher names her pedagogy a pedagogy of “elusive particulars” and in the final chapter, turns the study into a self-reflective narrative search for meaning. The study calls attention to the importance of teaching lore and community and time apart for teachers to re-envision themselves and their practices. The study calls for further research into the affective lives of teachers and for research to discover models that demonstrate that teaching itself can produce disciplinary knowledge.
