Edwin Francis Jemison was a sixteen-year-old boy from Monroe, Louisiana, who volunteered in the Confederate Army on May 1861 before dying a year later in the Battle of Malvern Hill. Despite having a famous picture that has been constantly printed in most Civil War books, Edwin’s story was limited to his early volunteering and his death. While Alexander Filipowski and Hugh Harrington made an impressive biography of this boy’s history, there were some parts missing in the narrative, especially concerning who witnessed Edwin’s death. The purpose of this thesis is to expand the narrative of Edwin Francis Jemison with the addition of his company, the Pelican Grays, who were the prime candidates when witnessing his death at Malvern Hill. These results would confirm the details Harrington and Filipowski collected on Edwin Jemison, as well as expand the narrative concerning who were the real witnesses. The thesis is the first academic paper concerning the story of Edwin Jemison and will provide efficient methods to not only aid in expanding Edwin’s story, but also that of the Pelican Grays, who were involved in the same military experience of the Civil War.
