Hedda Gabler has always been associated with feminist ideology, a reputation that stems not from the playwright but from the appropriation of the play by the Women’s Rights Movement at the end of the nineteenth century. This thesis explores how such a history has influenced contemporary productions of Hedda Gabler, many of which strive to reinforce what they believe to be the feminist notions inherent in the text. In their faithful reproductions of Ibsen’s work, however, these adaptors and directors instead limit Hedda’s viability in the twenty-first century. By contrast, the adaptations that radically deconstruct the play and remodel it into a completely new entity are more effectively able to reach our contemporary audience. If Hedda Gabler is to have a place in the postmodern world, it must be freed from the patriarchal hegemony of realism and reframed through adaptation as a theatrical experience relevant for today.
