  • Background: Breast cancer is the most diagnosed cancer globally. Mammography is the gold standard for breast cancer screening, diagnosis, and early detection. Required notification of mammographic breast density begins nationally in the United States in September 2024. However, imaging reports possess a high readability level and are accessed by patients through online patient portals. Healthcare systems have implemented the patient- and family-centered care model, which advocates for patient-friendly imaging reports and opportunities for consultation with a radiologist.Method: A review of the literature investigated (a) the impact of breast density notification on well-being, (b) future breast cancer screening behavior, (c) the influence of patient-friendly radiology reports and informational media on patient satisfaction, (d) the interaction with a radiologist and patient satisfaction and well-being. Results: A literature review demonstrated that breast density notification after screening mammography significantly affects psychological well-being by causing anxiety, confusion, and worry about breast cancer risk. However, findings indicated a significantly favorable intention to participate in future screening mammography. Characteristics of patient-friendly reports included structured formats, shorter sentences, and the strategic use of color, graphics, and images. Satisfaction with imaging care improved significantly with the distribution of informational media. Finally, consultation with a radiologist significantly increased imaging care satisfaction, positively affecting well-being.Conclusions: Breast density notification after screening mammography produces adverse psychological effects such as anxiety, worry, and concern about breast cancer risk. However breast density notification is positively associated with participation in screening mammography. Patient-friendly imaging reports, informational materials, and consultation with a radiologist improve patient satisfaction and well-being.
