  • Herbert Eimert's Lehrbuch der Zwölftontechnik (Guide to 12-tone technique) is the first book written after the second World War addressing 12-tone theory. Divided into two main sections, the book begins with a brief account of musical events leading up to atonality and 12-tone music. Next, Eimert discusses the new role of intervallic circles (i.e. the Circle of 5ths) in 12-tone music, the function of the octave and the tritone in 12-tone music, and the varying degrees of interval and sonority tensions. He then discusses elements of tonality carried over into 12-tone music and the statistical data behind 12-tone music. The following section looks at all-interval 12-tone rows and new rows constructed in relation to the circle of 4ths and the circle of 5ths. The section concludes with examination of a 12-tone row and its derivations. The second section deals with 12-tone composition. First, Eimert establishes rules for creating a 12-tone row and a 12-tone row. The prime form of the row and its derivations are discussed next, from a compositional standpoint, followed by 12-tone harmonic rules, and rules of counterpoint. Breaking up a 12-tone row to form new rows is next, followed by an analysis of a section of Schoenberg's Op. 26 Wind Quintet. The section concludes with free 12-tone forms. A brief history of the origin of 12-tone music concludes the work.
