This dissertation is principally concerned with Robert Sokolowski’s account of God’s transcendence, or what Sokolowski refers to as the “Christian distinction.” It is argued - with Sokolowski - that it is only in light of Christ that the fullest understanding of divine transcendence can be grasped. The dissertation begins with a study of Sokolowski’s phenomenological account of theology and of language in order to shed light on the manner in which God is disclosed through the biblical text. The relevance of Sokolowski’s thought on issues such as biblical inspiration and interpretation, the senses of scripture, and the relation between scripture and the Church are discussed. After this, the dissertation focuses on the Christian distinction. In support of Sokolowski’s thesis that the distinction is known only in light of Christ, this dissertation draws upon Sokolowski’s various philosophical and theological studies, scholarship on the origin of the doctrine of creation ex nihilo, and relevant themes within the New Testament, such as Christ’s teaching on non-violence and the theme of seeing in the Gospel of Mark.
