Discourse Analysis (DA) is a complicated topic. The intricacy of the linguistics discipline and the evolving nature of DA contributes to this complexity. However, scholars have advertised DA as an essential skill in hermeneutics and homiletics. If the structure of the biblical text should shape the structure of the sermon, then DA should play a vital role in sermon preparation. The project director believes the exegetical payoff of incorporating this discipline into the preacher’s study makes navigating this difficult discipline worth the labor. Therefore, a clearly delineated plan for developing the necessary skills to employ DA will assist the pastor in developing sermon series for the people of God.While the first chapter explains the purpose and context for the project, the second chapter lays the exegetical foundation. The project director examines 2 Timothy 2:15; 3:16–17; and 2 Peter 1:20–21 to demonstrate that faithfully preaching is an important but difficult task. The third chapter explores the history of linguistics and its relationship to biblical studies and preaching. The fourth chapter narrates the execution of the project, and the final chapter details the success and weaknesses of the project. The project director’s goal is to improve his preaching by the application of discourse analysis to the sermon planning process.
