  • Using the Sociocommunication Model of Infant Pain as a theoretical guide, the aim of the current study was to examine whether infants' observations of mothers' faces moderated the relationship between maternal facial expressions of pain and/or fear and infant facial expressions of pain during routine immunizations. Thirty-two mother-infant dyads were videotaped during routine immunization. Multiple regression analyses revealed that infants' observations of mothers' faces prior to needle predicted lower infant facial expressions of pain immediately post needle. Furthermore, infants' observations of mothers' faces prior to needle interacted with mother's facial expressions of pain (exhibited immediately prior to needle) to predict lower infant pain facial activity immediately post needle. Mothers who display facial expressions of pain immediately prior to needle may be more sensitive to infants' emotional cues which may, in turn, support infants' abilities to cope with distress. The results of the current study provide support for the Sociocommunication Model.
