The Ph.D. investigates how Jewish women in Antwerp experience the dual normativity that comes with the significance of Jewish law in Jewish religion. The research comprises 3 main parts. The first part is an introduction in Jewish law. It deals with the basic underlying principles of the religious legal system, as well as its self-perceived relation to the state legal system. After an introduction to the internal concepts of Jewish law, the research follows two complementary approaches. The first one questions the state legal approach of the Jewish religion and the extent in which the accommodation of the Jewish religion entails accommodation of its law as well. A comparison is made between the Belgian, the French and the American system. The final part is based on qualitative research wherein the experience of the women that live the law is questioned. Whereas the state legal approach-part is a rather traditional legal research, the second part draws upon the methods of legal anthropology. The conclusion binds the two together and reveals ways in which the empirical part enhances our legal insights in this matter.
