  • Background: Gluteus medius (GM) weakness is prevalent in many patient populations today. While there is evidence that dry-needling (DN), a thin monofilament needles without injectate, decreases patient pain and disability, there is limited evidence showing how DN affects strength and muscle activation. Purpose: The purpose of our study was to observe the effects of DN in situ on muscle strength and activation of the gluteus medius as compared to sham needling in a healthy population. Methods: An experimental design, pretest-posttest, randomized control design. Participants (N=14) were randomly assigned into a group receiving DN or sham DN. Handheld dynamometery (HHD) was used to measure maximal volitional isometric contraction of the gluteus medius in the standard testing position before and after DN. DN remained in situ for 15 minutes with subject in prone. sEMG was used during a balance activity to record maximal voluntary contraction during 4 balancing positions before and after. Results: An independent t-test was used to compare pre and post conditions of control and experimental groups, the p-value was significant for change in muscle strength (p=0.05), while the change in muscle activation, EMG, was not significant (p > 0.05). Discussion/Conclusion: The results showed a significant change in strength with DN compared to the control, although there was no significant change for muscle activation. Further research is needed to learn the effectiveness of the DN intervention on muscle strength and activation long term.
