The thesis attempts to look at chosen examples of architecture of the last decade of the 20th century through a prism of the idea of emptiness in its esthetic and philosophical sense. It analyses the issue of empty space in the latest architecture mainly in formal categories, treating emptiness as the important and fascinating means of architectural expression. At the same time it discusses the ethical aspect of the problem of emptiness taking into consideration both the limits and the necessity of free, unbuilt space, as well as the increasing need to relax in time of information overload. The work concentrates mainly on presenting the possibilities of empty space being elaborated in contemporary design practice. It enumerates the basic methods of creation, puts them in typological order, showing various forms of architectural expression of emptiness and specific characteristics of empty space connected with these forms. The thesis emphasizes the significance of emptiness—the basic element without which all endeavors in space lose their nature, and whose importance is growing in an era of urban development and overcrowded nature of today's world. The examples prove that emptiness is more and more often becoming a dominant factor, at times developing from a mere means of creation to the art of creation. The thesis is a complex analysis of the issue of empty space in contemporary architecture accompanied by elements of theory and history of architecture, physics, cosmology and philosophy. The examples of architectural project and realization used in this work come mainly from the period between 1989 and 1999 and therefore they are valuable source of information about architecture of the last decade of the 20 th century. The work shows the role and meaning that empty space has in the creation of contemporary architectural environment. It emphasizes the need of protection of some empty areas in time of increasing urbanization and degradation of natural environment. It can contribute not only to the development of the new esthetics but also to the view of architecture through the prism of global and ecological interests.
