Jewish American writing has become a distinct category of literature through the historical changes and sociocultural challenges to the identity of this group since the mass immigrations of Jews to the U.S. beginning in the late 1800s. The particular concern of this descriptive study is the depression era novels of Anzia Yezierska. Salome of the Tenements, Bread Givers, Arrogant Beggar, Red Ribbon on a White Horse, an d All I Could Never Be are examined in terms of the significance of their underlying Jewish ethics and the aspect of hope in spite of the extremely desperate circumstances of the era. Non-fiction resources on relevant philosophy, theology, history, and literature are used in this analysis. The conclusions are presented in terms of the importance of the salient ethical issues of these novels and their relationship with the context of the depression era.
