This study explores the unconscious motivations of the pulpit rabbi. Although much of the literature reviewed in this study casts pulpit rabbis in a pathologized light, their mental health, as assessed by standard psychological instruments, generally falls within the normal range (Dittes, 1971; Nauss, 1973; Lee, 1988; Patrick, 1991). Nevertheless, this study presents evidence that unconscious conflicts, as well as, distorted self and object representations distinguish the pulpit rabbi's personality. These features restrict gratification of drives, generate depressive affect and promote conflict with people and institutions. They also, typically, underpin the decision of individuals to become pulpit rabbis. The presence of these features provides evidence that pulpit rabbis tend to exhibit the characteristics of an introjective personality.
