  • This dissertation examines the relationship between literature and science from the mid-nineteenth to the early twentieth century in the United States. It focuses on the cultural work that fiction performed through its adoption, adaptation, and dissemination of scientific discourse, specifically the concepts and terminology of thermodynamics. I examine the way gender is taken up in both the literature and popular science of the day and argue that the cultural work performed by literature and science was accomplished jointly. Together they made a significant impact on the social construction of gender in nineteenth and twentieth-century America.
