Cortisol is a well-documented biomarker for psychological stress. Chronically elevated cortisol levels have been shown to be harmful to one's health. It is important to identify sources of stress in order to recommend appropriate coping strategies to reduce stress. The Personal Styles Inventory-120 (PSI-120) dissonant styles component may be useful in detecting sources of chronic stress (Kunce, Newton, & Cope, 2005). Using a sample of University students, the present study attempted to validate the PSI-120 dissonant styles component as a self-report measure of chronic stress by measuring the correlation between the number of dissonant styles and salivary cortisol levels. In addition, since increased stress has been associated with reduced performance on measures of working memory, the relationship between scores on the WAIS-III Working Memory Index (Wechsler, 1997) and the PSI-120 dissonant styles and cortisol levels was determined. No significant correlations emerged between any of the aforementioned factors, ps > .05.
