  • Miles to the Horizon is a novel that tells the story of a family of beekeepers who move from England to Nova Scotia at the end of the Eighteenth Century. Interspersed with the narrative are sections of bee-history and bee-lore designed to engage the reader directly in the detailed attentiveness demanded by beekeeping. Because bees are essentially wild creatures, undomesticated, the keeper must pay attention to their rhythms in order to work with them, must adapt to the pace of bee-life. This kind of attentiveness is perhaps rare in modern Western society, and the novel as a whole explores the ways in which the characters are (or are, significantly, not) affected by the demands of this attentiveness to something beyond the self. The novel is an attempt to explore the value of attentiveness, the value of working with something wild, unsubdued, demanding.
