Transracial adoption is a controversial topic which has been long debated in American society and the profession of social work. Little has been written from the viewpoint of the adoptees, themselves. Two primary issues related to transracial adoption are societal conditions resulting in significant numbers of children of color needing out-of-home placement and the importance of early placement in successful adaptation and development of adopted children. Adoption policy is again the subject of intense scrutiny and legislative action; social workers need to understand the many facets of adoption and participate in the debate. In this study, eight adults who had been adopted transracially by White families were interviewed about their experiences and their attitudes towards the practice of transracial adoption. Content analysis of the interviews revealed that the variety of their responses corresponded with the breadth of professional opinion on the topic, ranging from enthusiastic support to vehement opposition.
