• Rainforests are the basis of income generation for millions of people. Increasing population densities in developing countries it heavy pressure on this resource. Due to the fact that rainforests are a valuable economic resource, we cannot expect people to stop using them. However, by finding economically viable alternatives to the destructive uses of logging and slash-and-burn agriculture, we can curb the trend towards deforestation. This thesis analyzes one possible alternative to deforestation: the establishment of an extractive reserve which attempted to bridge conservation with development, the Terra Nova Medicinal Plant Reserve. The project was based on the conservation of medicinal plants and environmental knowledge systems of traditional healers. The thesis analyzes the project and sheds light onto the current dilemmas facing the international community in respect to conservation projects and bioprospecting operations.
