  • The aim of the present study was to examine consumers' satisfaction with outpatient mental health services in Puerto Rico across health sectors and health settings. The sample consisted of 243 noninstitutionalized adults, residents of low income areas, who used different types of formal health care providers. This sample represents 13% of the total sample surveyed (N = 1,777) using a two-stage stratified cluster sample of the Island. The short version of the Service Satisfaction Scale emerged as a reliable measure to examine satisfaction. It contained two factors: satisfaction with outcome of services (POP), and with the practitioner (PPT). About two thirds of the consumers expressed satisfaction. The Systemic Model emerged as a powerful framework to examine satisfaction when compared to the Marketplace Model. The findings revealed issues affecting the consumers, such as, differential and preferential treatment, transportation problems, and a gap on services provided to those in high need of care, among others.
