Beschreibungen/Notizen
In the summer of 2016 the construction of a new housing development provided the occasion for an archaeological investigation on land off Front Street, Dinnington, Newcastle Upon Tyne. The excavation of a targeted 0.5 ha area from mid-May to mid-July revealed a series of plot boundary ditches and three grain drying kilns. These were dated through a combination of ceramic and radiocarbon dating to the 11th to 14th centuries AD, the same date range as for the series of corn drying kilns recently published from East Rainton and Acomb (Vance 2021). Environmental sampling of the kilns and related pit features at Dinnington revealed the strong preponderance of oat grain. Immediately adjacent to the north and west of these medieval features, remains indicative of a series of five Iron Age roundhouses and two plot boundary ditches were discovered.
