Beschreibungen/Notizen
The study analyzed motivation in several small police departments located in the central San Joaquin Valley, California. For the study, small police departments were defined as having 40 or less personnel. Police officers as well as chiefs of police answered questionnaires which supplied the data base for eleven hypotheses. Hypotheses regarding the definition of motivation and the use of discipline as a motivational tool proved true. Hypotheses concerning law enforcement agencies relying on salaries and benefits, and the responsibility for motivation belonging to the employee proved false, though the latter showed differences when analyzed by officers versus chiefs of police. The study showed that by far the major motivational factor for the study group was recognition. Discussion of these issues and explorations of the remaining hypotheses are also presented.
