• This thesis is the result of the study and design of hardware and software interfacing for the IBM PC-XT to connect the PC to the external world for control and data acquisition. The architecture and bus structure of the PC are studied, and the consideration and methodology of designing an I/0 interface are introduced. The BIOS is considered for system I/0 device operations, and the 8088 assembly language programs are discussed for monitoring and controlling an I/0 interface. Interface designs are introduced for a PC system bus expansion, a digital I/0 interface and an analog I/0 interface. In addition, basic utility programs are developed for these interfaces, because communication with the external world requires both hardware and software drivers.
