  • This study of the novels and poetic works of the contemporary French writer, Alain Bosquet, attempts to reveal the complementary relationship existing between the two different forms of writing, prose and poetry. The poet's search--through "le verbe"--for the fragments of his inner being or "moi-meme" may begin only after the novelist (within the same writer) has reconciled himself with past events, which Bosquet sums up as his "siecle". The non-narrative structure in many of Bosquet's novels resemble the poetic text; on the other hand, the image of nuclear annhilation, in his later poetry collections, appears as an echo of the problems dealt with formerly in the novels. These are the author's "quarrels" with his generation. The duality of Bosquet's writing, as well as the dual role he plays as both poet and "prosateur", present an interesting case for modern criticism: as a novelist, he responds to problems regarding outside reality; as a poet, he refuses to "answer" any questions and only continues to question the relationship between his "moi" and his "moi-meme". Although the two different styles, the novel on one hand, and the poem on the other hand, correspond to two different needs within the same writer, there persists a mutual echoing and a mutual dependency between the two different forms of writing.
