  • A diverse selection of approximately 600 glass specimens representing 5 different types of glass (vehicle headlamps, containers, float glass used in architectural windows, vehicle windows and casework specimens) were characterized by refractive index (RI) and elemental composition analysis. RI was determined by GRIM2 and the concentrations of Ba, Mn, Fe, Mg, Ca, Ti, Al, Sr and Zr in the bulk glass were measured by Inductively Coupled Plasma-Atomic Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-AES).Statistical analyses of the RI and composition data describe the glass populations studied, enabling the characterization of each population. Fisher's Linear Discriminant Analysis was developed to predict the glass type between headlamp, container and float but further classification by manufacturer was not possible. Pairwise comparisons between all the glass samples within each sub-set defined the discrimination power of ICP-AES data over RI comparisons alone. These calculations suggest a considerable enhancement in discrimination power when the composition data are included in the analysis. While comparisons of RI data may distinguish approximately 91% of casework samples by itself, this work supports that an increase in discrimination to over 99.8% of the casework samples is expected when elemental composition data is collected by ICP-AES and incorporated into the analysis scheme.
