• The behavior of compounds containing an ethynylmethyl group became of interest as the result of investigations in this laboratory to determine the effect of ethynyl substitution on the dissociation of ethane derivatives to free methyl radicals. Substituted acetylenic groups R-C*C having about the same weight and unsaturation as phenyl groups were proposed by Marvel and Gray as aliphatic substituents which might cause dissociation of hexa- substituted ethanes. All of the free radicals of the arylmethyl type which were known up to that time contained at least two aryl groups attached to the trivalent carbon atom. It was thought that dissociation of hexaethynyl ethanes would provide practical proof for the idea that mass and unsaturation, and not aromatic character, are the important factors in the dissociation of substituted ethanes.
