Beschreibungen/Notizen
National Zoological Park (NZP) in Delhi, India, is home to different bird, reptile, and mammal species. It not only provides a haven for endangered species, but also promotes their reproduction in captivity. A fourteen-day survey was conducted, with daily walks of five kilometers to record bird species, which were then uploaded into the mobile app “eBird.” Finally, a complete bird checklist was acquired. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) classified
Mycteria leucocephala
as Near Threatened. Since 1959, the NZP has been a prominent nesting and breeding site for
M. leucocephala
in Delhi. The NZP contains two concrete-lined shallow water ponds as well as
Prosopis juliflora
trees where
M. leucocephala
eggs are laid. Apart from captive breeding and free-ranging, breeding is also high for
M. leucocephala
and is housed in a walk-in aviary with a large mesh-size net. Three large poles are erected over which bamboo sitting platforms are constructed. During the breeding season, wooden baskets are tied over these platforms to make egg-laying and incubation easier. Some problems need to be resolved, including poor enrichment, animal compatibility, inbreeding, senility, mortality, and the lack of modern healthcare facilities.
