The present work aims to verify the anticonvulsant activity of Sphaeranthus indicus Linn flower head aqueous fraction on maximal electro-convulsion shock in Albino mice. The flower head of Sphaeranthus indicus Linn. was collected and extracted with distilled water.A thick bulk was formed from the concentrated fraction. The mice were separated into six group in which six animals in each group. In the four groups (group III to VI), the mice were administeredaqueous extract ofSphaeranthus indicus Linn.at the doses (50/100/200/400 milligram/kg i.p.) half an hour before subjecting the animals toelectro convulsions. One group (group II) was injected diazepam (4.0 milligram/kg intra peritonial) and other group (group I) was administeredwith normal saline for half an hour before subjecting the animals toelectro convulsions. The analysis of data confirms that the extract at dose 200 milligram/kg had shown prolonged onset time of convulsion and lowered the duration of tonic-extensor phase very efficiently, above which the period of tonic-extensor phase starts increasing and Diazepam treated mice showed tonic hind leg extension for 4 sec whereas mice treated with the aq. extract (50,100,200 & 400 mg/kg) exhibit hind leg extension for 12, 11.5, 2.5, & 4 sec respectively
