  • Through a textual analysis, this thesis aims to analyse how madness and cultural identity can redefine African feminism as perceived in the works of the corpus chosen for this research. It takes as its point of departure the fact that Africa remains a continent where in the 21st century many women are still torn between Western values and African cultural values. It draws on a range of definitions provided by scholars for the concepts of feminism, cultural identity and madness. This thesis demonstrates that the crises and behavioural conflicts experienced in Africa after independence can be linked to an identity crisis, a direct consequence of a poorly assimilated Western civilization. Furthermore, it shows that the consequences of this identity crisis are comparable to certain forms of madness. Finally, it establishes the fact that this madness is not only an evil that plagues various African countries, but that it can also be a solution, a type of revolt that takes place through African feminist writings. This thesis explores a range of such literary texts by three contemporary francophone authors and the varied contributions they make to our understanding of African feminism by focusing on the key concepts of madness and cultural identity in their work.
