• The purpose of this thesis was to write a grant proposal to seek funding to implement a Restorative Justice program designed specifically for detained justice-involved youth. The Youth of Light pilot program targets justice-involved youth and their families in Los Angeles County. The project aims to expand adult restorative justice services to youth so that they can move from wrongdoing to accountability, empathy, self-awareness and compassion. With a review of literature that concentrated on the history of mass incarceration, risk factors for incarceration and biased practices towards justice-involved youth, the grant writer proposed a mindfulness program that focuses more on rehabilitation rather than punishment. With extensive research, the grant writer was able to write a grant proposal for the Carrie Estelle Doheny Foundation. Actual submission of the grant was not required to complete this pilot project.
