  • This doctoral project dissertation focuses on the preaching of evangelical pastors of Haiti. It arose from the fact that preaching from the pulpit, in the Haitian context, does not assert scriptural authority in the lives of believers who are anchored in pagan sociocultural practices, mainly stemming from the vodou religion, and theological beliefs that are inappropriate in relation to the way of thinking, feeling, perceiving and acting. The document also reviews, in parallel, two field surveys which confirmed the magnitude of this problem.Four explanatory factors underlie the problem stated above: (1) The trivialization of the authority of the Bible is due to the historical influences of Roman Catholicism and vodou in Haiti, (2) Haitian evangelical preaching is often a perverted-reductionist preaching that does not lead the hearer to knowing God and undermines His true glory, (3) Haitian pastors show no interest in evaluating or addressing believer’s pagan sociocultural practices, and (4) the faith of Christians is a superficial faith and not an authentic biblical faith. To remedy it, and considering preaching as a predominant and transformative factor, the project director proposes a dissertation project whose purpose is to train Haitian evangelical pastors to rely on the Bible when preaching. He promotes a biblical preaching approach, centered on God's sovereignty, and culturally adapted. This preaching approach is intended to impact Christians at the level of thought and behavior through the Word of God by introducing them to a true knowledge of the person of God in order to respond in obedience to His Word in their cultural context.
