  • Alshehri examines the performativity of class and gender in the short story Shiloh by Bobbie Ann Mason. Shiloh, which is part of her collection entitled Shiloh and Other Stories that was published in 1982, is one of the thought-provoking literary texts from this transformational period that situates women's work within gender and class discourse. Referring to the Civil War battleground where the Union defeated the Confederacy, the title of the story also indicates the massive social, economic, and political transformation occurring in the US as a result. In this sense, Shiloh is a symbolic reference to the transformations brought about by political events that impacted the fabric of American society. In fact, if the Civil War is seen as the peak of the economic conflict between the industrial North and the agricultural South, then the title of this story reflects the turning point of this economic shift and its undeniable repercussions for the structure of the American family.
