  • For anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries, a 2022 systematic review found low SES was associated with worse self-reported outcomes and higher complication rates post-ACL reconstruction (ACLR), but all data was from American studies. Consenting volunteers completed online bespoke questionnaires regarding: i) demographics (i.e., sex, age), surgery history (i.e., total number of ACL surgeries, primary vs revision) and number of rehabilitation sessions attended, ii) health insurance used for ACLR (private vs publicly-funded (i.e., Medicare)), iii) postal addresses - used to determine SES using the Index of Relative Socioeconomic Advantage and Disadvantage from Australian Bureau of Statistics data, with these scores dichotomised ‘below’ vs ‘at/above the state average’ for analysis); and iv) four subscales of the Knee injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS) (pain, symptoms, sport/recreation, quality of life), which were averaged to provide a measure of self-reported symptoms and function (KOOS4). Furthermore, outcomes for participants recruited through private surgical clinics (i.e., using private insurance) may not be generalisable to a wider ACL-injured population with low SES groups poorly represented.
