Beschreibungen/Notizen
An individual of
Varanus flavescens
Hardwicke and Gray, 1827 has been recorded from the Laksar-Aithal road, near Bukkanpur village in Haridwar district of the Uttarakhand State. The area lies under the
khadar
plains and consists of numerous perennial and annual water streams, which all are the tributaries to river Ganges. Considering the reliable records in the literature and preliminary observations, it appears that the species has a rare patchy distribution across the Pathri rau(rau means river) near Aithal, however, is uncommon. This is the first documented record, which confirms the presence of the species in
khadar
plains in the State with photographic plates and notes on species’ natural history. As the species is poorly studied monitor in the Indian geographic range and basic data on its behavior and ecology is lacking, scientific studies are needed to be conducted to formulate a long-term conservation plan for this globally threatened species.
