The volume is among the first books in SUNY Press’s Critical Race Studies in Education Series. et al. and highlight the role anti-Black structures and actors in obstructing the liberatory and humanizing potential of higher education. Part 2, “Institutional Rhetoric and the False Promises of ‘Diversity’ and ‘Inclusion,’ ” examines the symbolic nature of diversity initiatives and how the labor of making diversity happen falls on the shoulders of a few Black university employees. The reader will finish this book with a deeper understanding of plantations and chattel slavery in the US, the history of US higher education and its sustained legacy of anti-Black racism, the labor of diversity professionals, the various machinations of resistance and activism from Black people in higher education, and, more generally, race relations in higher education.
