  • The politics of multilateral emissions treaties are challenging due to various obstacles such as the free-rider problem, domestic support for fossil fuels, resentment from developing nations, a hostile national security environment, and skepticism from the Republican Party. As a result, only one country, Gambia, has made commitments in line with the Paris Agreement. The global average temperature is currently at 1.1 degrees above pre-industrial levels, and carbon emissions continue to increase. To address these challenges, air capture technology, which removes carbon directly from the air, is proposed as a potential solution. This technology has the advantage of not requiring worldwide cooperation, not disproportionately impacting established interest groups, not requiring the participation of developing nations, and being relatively acceptable to Republicans in the US. While the viability of air capture at an industrial scale is uncertain, it offers a politically feasible approach to addressing climate change.
