  • The oviposition of gravid female moths of rice leaffolder, Cnaphalocrosis medinalis Guenee (Pyralidae: Lepidoptera) correlates with the host plant’s fitness for their offspring development. The preference for oviposition and subsequent larval performance of leaffolders were studied on transgenic rice plants expressing an insecticidal protein Cry2AX1 to understand the adult oviposition and larval development behaviour of rice leaffolders. Expression of Cry2AX1 protein in transgenic plants ranged between 18 ± 0.01 and 128 ± 0.06 ng/gram of fresh leaf tissues. The female adults did not exhibit preference for oviposition between transgenic and non-transgenic plants. However, significant differences in larval survival and adult emergence indicated the deleterious effect of transgenic plants on the growth and development of larval and adult stages. The larvae took a longer time for selection and folding of leaves on transgenic plants compared to wild-type counterparts. Besides, the folding length in the leaves of transgenic plants was shorter, exposing the larvae to biotic (parasitoids and predators) and abiotic factors.
