  • Nowadays it is a big challenge for all German teachers in Serbia to motivate learners to learn the German language in the long term. Motivation is a complex internal factor that depends on the effort and will a person invests in learning the target language. With regard to the motivation for learning a foreign language, we distinguish between cultural and instrumental motivation (Šuvakovic, 2017, p. 52). Cultural motivation is primarily concerned with learning the local language or a foreign language, where learning the foreign language can be a source of satisfaction in itself. On the other hand, one speaks of instrumental motivation when personal and practical goals require learning the foreign language, such as: studying abroad or looking for a job in a foreign-speaking country, German tests, better grades, homework, etc. Numerous studies have dealt with the question of the connection between cultural and instrumental motivation (Durbaba, 2011; Gardner, 1985; Vilke, 1995). Early research suggests that cultural motivation has a greater impact on successful language learning. However, new studies today show that the practical use of a foreign language, i.e. instrumental motivation, leads to greater success in language learning (Fischer, 2008; Haghani & Maleki, 2018; Höfener, Hüninghake & Ritterfeld, 2019; Kleppin, 2004; Osman Engin, 2009; Schmidt, 1986; Suvakovic, 2017). In summary, it can be said that instrumental motivation is of great importance for our work as language teachers.
