Since the Renaissance, the ancient world of Greece and Rome has exerted its presence as a dominant filter or prism through which educated Europeans have viewed reality. The influence of ancient Greece and Rome is clearly revealed in the French literature during l'age de classicism in such works as Racine's Mithridate (1673), Iphigénie (1674), Andromaque (1667), Phèdre (1677), and Corneille's Horace (1640), Cinna (1643), and Polyeucte (1643).
