In a significant subset of contemporary German novels, the fundamental transformation that is currently restructuring the Literaturbetrieb (literary institutions) becomes the center of attention. Taking its clues from Klaus Modick's Bestseller (2006), Thomas Glavinic's Das bin doch ich (2007), Ulrich Woelk's Joana Mandelbrot und ich (2008), and Christine Lehmann's Malefizkrott (2010), the article analyzes the changing concept and practice of writing, how authorship is performed, how women are constructed as players in literary institutions, and how satirical, metafictional and metaleptic writing contribute to form a literary metadiscourse that invites a critical view of these new developments.
