[...]Crispin, the “affectionate emigrant” (CPP 26), is out of his element most of the time, on the edge, “washed away by magnitude” (CPP 22), trying to make sense of an environment in which, to quote a later poem, “The squirming facts exceed the squamous mind” (CPP 195). The jar in Tennessee is “placed,” but in a sense also displaced, since it does not belong on the hill, and “did not give of bird or bush” (CPP 60–61). The old philosopher in Rome is not a Roman philosopher, after all, and the poet conceiving an idea of order at Key West is not a native of Key West, but they are learning the speech of the place.
