Henrietta Stackpole in The Portrait of a Lady is a more nuanced personification of a publicity-hungry press than James's other journalist characters. As a minor character, she allows James to exercise his vision of non-intrusive writing by keeping this public-facing woman's private life away from her fellow characters and his readers and neutralizing her risk to exposing others' private lives and overly disrupting social norms of gender and publicity. Her professional success, romantic relationship, and role as Isabel Archer's foil show that James was at best ambivalent toward and saw an uncertain future for journalism, privacy, and women.
