• We compared the horizontal and vertical movement of greater amberjack Seriola dumerili from two different locations in the East China Sea (ECS). In the coastal waters off southern Kyushu (Satsunan) in the central part of the ECS, seven individuals were equipped with pop-up satellite archival tags that recorded depth and temperature for up to 135 days. The tagged S. dumerili in the coastal waters of Satsunan remained around the release location and showed a narrower horizontal movement range compared to the S. dumerili tagged off the coastal waters of eastern Taiwan. Although the vertical distribution of S. dumerili varied between the habitats, the range of ambient temperatures was similar in the two locations. This suggests that the vertical distribution of S. dumerili is determined mainly by the ambient temperature. Species identification using PCR-based restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis of the nuclear ITS region and the mitochondrial cytochrome b region of the tagged individuals indicated that one of the tagged individuals with morphological characteristics of S. dumerili showed a similar PCR-RFLP pattern of the mitochondrial cytochrome b region of almaco jack S. rivoliana.
