Using a hermeneutic and heuristic methodology, this thesis explores the topic of sexuality and the erotic in the context of the realities of Indian women and femmes under Brahminical Patriarchy. The research question asks: What are important archetypes, concepts, and themes related to the erotic, sexuality, and dance that are relevant to the histories and realities of Indian women and femmes under Brahminical patriarchy? This thesis interrogates dominant caste attitudes toward the erotic and the consequences of these attitudes. I highlight historical conditions in Brahminical and colonial India which reveal the ways casteism, colonialism, and cisheteropatriarchy inform the policing of the erotic of Indian women and femmes. I name archetypes and themes relevant to the experiences and histories of Indian Trans femme and gender non-conforming dancers, Indian Dalit and Bahujan women and femmes, Indian lesbians, Indian cisgender women courtesan dancers, and dominant caste cisgender women and femmes.
