Beschreibungen/Notizen
  • Adolescent-Young Adult (AYA) cancer patients are an emerging sub-population in oncology. Developing research indicates that the population's specific needs are not being met by the current services, particularly in the field of co-morbid mental health. The AYA population presents unique developmental needs at a crossroads with the significant medical diagnosis they have received. I Have Cancer, Now What?: A Program to Assist Adolescent-Young Adult (AYA) Cancer Patients with Co-Morbid Mental Health and Cancer Diagnoses will create a space for the AYA population to address their mental health needs. The program occurs along with others undergoing similar navigational issues of developmental, physical, and mental health needs. The program will decrease symptoms of depression and anxiety for AYA patients with co-morbid mental health diagnoses of Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Other Specified Anxiety Disorder, Unspecified Anxiety Disorder, Adjustment Disorder with anxiety, Major Depressive Disorder, Other Specified Depressive Disorder, Unspecified Depressive Disorder, Adjustment Disorder with depression, or Adjustment Disorder with depression and anxiety. The reduction in symptoms occurs through utilizing Cognitive Behavioral Therapy techniques and social support led by a trained mental health professional for a 10-week program. There will be an optional monthly follow-up program for individuals who have completed the 10-week program to provide continued support. Outcomes are measured with the Beck Anxiety Inventory, the Beck Depression Inventory 2nd Edition, and the Brief Symptom Inventory-18.
