  • The Vth International Uralo-Indo-European Conference took place in Narva (Estonia) on October 14th and 15th, 2022, with this year's main topic being Finno-Ugric-Ukrainian language contacts. The first day was dedicated to bringing Ukrainian language and culture closer to Estonian culture and language. Not only the historical and ecclesiastical-religious similarities and connections were vividly presented, but also the current topic of the use of Ukrainian in everyday life. Using the example of the Sunday school of the Ukrainian Catholic community, Evelin Küün convincingly demonstrated in her lecture how the use of Ukrainian in another country is maintained and preserved and thereby creates a bridge between the old and new homeland of Ukrainians living in Estonia can be. Based on the work Language and National Mentality by Orest Tkačenko, Anna Biljak and Snižana Fedorovič showed the close connection between the two aspects, as it is also lived today. In her lecture, Heinike Heinsoo added the aspect of language endangerment, which occurs particularly in less widespread languages, such as Ukrainian, but also Estonian and other languages of the Finno-Ugric language family. Nevertheless, languages continue to develop, which Oleg Sima demonstrated using the transformation of the Ukrainian language in the medical field over the past eight years. As Anu Nurk explained, the challenge arises to take new everyday vocabulary into account when creating a Ukrainian-Estonian dictionary.
