• The first member of this series, poly (a-methylvinyl- methyl ether), in contrast to the stereochemical preferences of poly(vinylmethyl ether), was found to be primarily syndiotactic in nature. We established the tacticity by high resoltuion nuclear magnetic resonance and by infrared spectroscору. We interpreted the results in terms of the greater stability of a pseudo six-membered oxonium ring formed by the ultimate residue and the prepenultimate resi- due, which govern the stereochemical configurations of the main chain during the course of propagation.
