Parekh focuses on the aspects of Black universals and Alain Locke's notion of value. Locke's relationship to philosophy is, as Leonard Harris has remarked, one of the enigmas of his life. On the one hand, Locke was drawn to philosophy early in his undergraduate education. At Harvard he quickly chose philosophy as his major, taking classes with William fames and Josiah Royce, thus getting a grounding in American pragmatism. Locke here declares that a pragmatic advocacy of cultural racialism is the reason for his sparse philosophical production, his desire diverted from professional philosophy to philosophical midwifery.
