Older adults are associated with changing in physiological and psychological processes. Decline in cognitive function significantly affects functional, social, and occupational activities which definitively can lead to a loss of independence. Depression is the most common psychological problem in older adults. This disorder becomes a serious public health issue in older adults. Thus, heath promoting interventions are important for older adults. There are several health promoting interventions in older adults, such as dance and mindfulness programs. We explored the effects of dance interventions on depression and cognition in older adults. We also examined the effects of mindfulness interventions on depression in older adults. We explored the moderating variables including source, method, intervention, and participant characteristics. We used the random-effects model to analyze data. We used Hedge’s g to represent the effect size. We examined heterogeneity and publication bias. We conducted a subgroup analysis and a meta-regression to examine the effects of moderator variables. Overall, dance interventions promoted global cognition, executive function, and attention in older adults. Moreover, dance groups showed a significant reduction in depression in older adults compared to control groups at post intervention. Mindfulness intervention shows significantly less depressive symptoms in older adults post intervention than comparison groups. There were several moderators affecting the effect sizes including country where the study was conducted, a priori power, blinded data collector, intention-to-treat, spouses or friends, dance in pairs, older adults with cognitive impairment, number of structured sessions per week, and guided meditation. Healthcare providers might use dance interventions and mindfulness meditation as an alternative and adjunctive treatment to relieve depressive symptoms and improve cognition in older adults.
