  • Two methods are presented to estimate the structure of the acoustic field generated in the working medium of an acousto-optic (AO) modulator by its ultrasonic emitter. The first method employs an acoustic microscope as a sensitive instrument focused on the end face of the crystal that is opposite to the face on which the piezoelectric transducer is located. The second method is based on the use of the emitter itself as a receiving element of short acoustic pulses. The methods are tested on working samples of serial AO modulators. The experimental results are used to determine the features of the field of the acoustic emitter, in particular, the presence of re-reflected waves and the difference in the amplitudes of the waves excited by different sections of the emitter. It is shown that the methods are efficient in monitoring of the structure of acoustic fields in the working medium of AO devices.
