  • The RADARSAT-2 spacecraft control subsystem (SCS) provides spacecraft activity planning and scheduling, real-time spacecraft commanding, health and safety monitoring, telemetry archiving, and orbit determination, prediction, and maneuver planning. The design of the SCS combines the use of flight-proven software with the need to support RADARSAT-2 specific command and control capabilities. The SCS provides a secure commanding capability via uplink encryption, resources to process 512 kilobits per second (kbps) housekeeping telemetry, tools to conduct spacecraft planning in a tight timeline for planning of routine command uploads, and a capability to provide planning and commanding support for frequent spacecraft attitude slews between the two nominal spacecraft pointing attitudes. The SCS has been sized and specified to provide adequate resources to support both launch and early orbit phase (LEOP) commissioning and routine operations phases of the RADARSAT-2 mission. This paper provides an introduction to the RADARSAT-2 SCS, its context within the ground segment, an overview of the major elements within the subsystem, and the development approach being used to implement these elements.
